What if we need couples counseling?

We provide individual counseling for adults, couples and families. Couples work together to solve their combined problem, but there are times when the problem belongs to only one person. If one or both of the partners suffer from another problem such as depression, anxiety, or substance abuse, we recommend that they get individual help for their problem either before or while getting marriage/couples counseling.

Sometimes a couple may wish to meet together, but also to meet separately, each with their own counselor. We are able to provide this service. When needed, and only with your permission, our counselors are in a unique position to consult with each other regarding your situation. Our flexible, multi-counselor availability provides you with customized counseling to meet your needs, and the needs of your family.

What is family counseling?

There are times when it is advantageous for the whole family to meet together. Often a family will have one member who is the “IDENTIFIED PATIENT.” This person appears to be the only one in the family who has problems, but often that one person (often a child) is taking on the role of the “problem” and keeping the family together as a unit. It is not unusual for a child to begin having problems when the parents are fighting. The child’s problems bring the parents together and temporarily stop the fighting. It appears that only the child has a problem, but until the family as a whole gets better, the child can’t give up the “SAVIOR” role and get better.
