FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does seeing a counselor mean I’m crazy?

Of course not. Seeing a counselor is something that you do to improve your own health and happiness. You will learn new coping skills and approaches to manage your emotions more effectively. Seeing a counselor is like talking to a friend, but is different in some important ways. A counselor is a safe person to talk to. Unlike a friend, you won’t have to worry about what your counselor thinks about you. You won’t have to worry about your counselor telling others your private thoughts or secrets. Your counselor will never judge you even if you have done something that others would condemn you for. He/she will help you look into yourself and learn to make the best decisions that you can make for yourself. Seeing a mental health counselor is like seeing a doctor – it’s something that everyone benefits from doing at certain times. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. After all, many wealthy and famous people see a counselor regularly.

Can you help my friend/relative/partner/adult-child with their problem? He/she refuses therapy.

No. We can’t help anyone unless they want help and attend sessions. If you are distressed by another person, we can help YOU to resolve your feelings. When you manage your own life better, you will be able to cope with another’s problems without becoming distressed by them. As much as you would like to help another adult, the only one you can really help is yourself.

Can you help my marriage if I come alone? My partner won’t come.

YES! When it comes to a marriage problem, getting therapy for yourself could be the first step in resolving your problems. In some cases it helps a person make a decision to leave, in other cases the changes one person makes saves the marriage, and sometimes the reluctant partner surprises everyone and decides to join the session after seeing the progress his/her partner is making.
